Vietnam approves railway project: China to help fund route connecting both countries
Vietnam's colonial-era rail tracks struggle with demand, prompting a new $8bn railway project. Backed by China, it will connect Haiphong to Lao Cai, boosting trade and tourism. The railway aims to improve the speed and predictability of China-Vietnam trade and vital for Vietnam’s manufacturing. While Laos faces debt from similar projects, Vietnam hopes the new route will ease domestic transport issues. Locals anticipate a more convenient travel experience. The project is part of China’s Belt and Road initiative, offering infrastructure investment despite Vietnam’s balancing act with the US. Al Jazeera’s Behdad Mahichi reports.
