Myanmar earthquake death toll rises to more than 1,600 people
Myanmar is grappling with the aftermath of its most devastating earthquake in decades, with the death toll rising to over 1,600. The quake struck Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city, leaving it the hardest hit. Hundreds remain missing, while rescue teams continue to search for survivors trapped under rubble, despite damaged infrastructure hampering efforts. The United Nations reports that humanitarian operations are severely hindered by blocked roads and collapsed buildings. Al Jazeera’s Tony Cheng reports from Mandalay.
