Bangladesh investigation: Sheikh Hasina's orders to halt protests revealed
Al Jazeera's Investigative Unit has obtained secret phone recordings of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, revealing her orders to use lethal force against student protesters during the 2024 uprising. The recordings, made by her intelligence agency, expose directives to deploy helicopters and use deadly weapons against gatherings. The investigation also uncovers attempts to cover up the killing of Abu Sayed, a student whose death became emblematic of the protests. Despite official claims of an ongoing investigation, the recordings suggest high-level interference in the post-mortem report. With over 1,400 people killed and tens of thousands injured during the protests, these revelations could have significant implications for ongoing criminal proceedings against Hasina, who has since fled to India. Al Jazeera's William Thorne reports. Abbas Faiz is an independent South Asia analyst whose work focuses on human rights in Bangladesh. He says the evidence uncovered by Al Jazeera is significant for those seeking justice.
