‘Netanyahu not on board with Trump’s plan,’ says ex-Israeli diplomat
The Israeli prime minister has no genuine interest in advancing the so-called Trump peace plan, former Israeli diplomat Alon Pinkas says, arguing that his focus remains on political survival rather than long-term peace. “He does not want a peace plan. He’s not on board with a Trump plan. Let there be no misunderstanding,” Pinkas told Al Jazeera. He said Netanyahu had only agreed to the talks after being “cornered and pressured by President Trump”. Pinkas speculated that Netanyahu views the release of Israeli captives as a short-term win to gain goodwill but believes reigniting the conflict could help preserve his governing coalition. “He has a vested interest in this not succeeding,” Pinkas said. The former diplomat added that Netanyahu is likely “banking on Mr Trump losing patience and disengaging” before the plan moves to later stages involving an Israeli withdrawal or the future governance of Gaza.
