Syria counts votes after indirect election for first post-Assad parliament
Vote counting has begun in some districts in Syria’s first parliamentary elections since the overthrow of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad, a landmark moment in the country’s fragile transition after nearly 14 years of war. Local committees have selected members for two thirds of the seats, while the rest will be appointed by President Ahmed Al Sharaa. Nawar Najmeh, spokesperson for Syria’s Higher Election Committee, told the state-run SANA news agency that voting in Sunday’s elections had concluded in some electoral districts, and the winning candidates will be announced during a news conference later in the day. Al Jazeera’s Osama Bin Javaid reports from the capital Damascus.
