Turkiye and Somalia denounce Israel’s recognition of breakaway Somaliland
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has condemned Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as illegitimate and destabilising. Speaking alongside Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mahmud in Istanbul, Erdogan reaffirmed Turkiye’s support for Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity. Somalia’s president said the move was a violation of his country’s sovereignty and warned it could fuel divisions and embolden armed groups. Erdogan accused Israel of breaching international law and undermining stability in the Horn of Africa. The talks highlighted Turkiye’s long-term security, economic and diplomatic partnership with Somalia. Protests also erupted in Mogadishu, with demonstrators rejecting Israel’s move as foreign interference. Al Jazeera's Sinem Koseoglu reports from Istanbul. Abdinor Dahir, an independent researcher and political analyst on Turkiye–Africa relations, said the decision threatens Somalia’s stability. He warned it also endangers Turkiye’s strategic, economic and security interests across the Horn of Africa.
