Syria and Israel hold second day of US-brokered Paris talks as border tensions rise
Senior Syrian and Israeli officials are holding a second day of US-brokered talks in Paris as tensions rise along the Syria–Israel frontier. Central to discussions is the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, which froze front lines, set a UN buffer zone, and limited forces on both sides for decades. Recent Israeli advances into southern Syria, including parts of the buffer zone, have Damascus calling violations of the accord. In Beit Jin in southern Syria, residents report increasingly aggressive incursions near civilian homes, breaking the long-standing tense status quo. Washington aims to contain conflict and limit regional spillover, while Israel seeks greater control and leverage, and Syria insists on full sovereignty and a return to the 1974 terms. The outcome of these talks could determine whether the border maintains uneasy restraint or escalates into wider conflict. Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar reports from Beit Jin in southern Syria. Alon Liel is a former Israeli ambassador who served as the Director General of Israel's Foreign Ministry. He explains what Israel wants.
