Iran attacks on Gulf states part of ‘strategy of chaos’ to pressure US into ceasefire: Analyst
Rob Geist Pinfold, a lecturer in international security at King's College London, told Al Jazeera that Iran's new supreme leader delivered a defiant but largely unchanged message. He dismissed as false Iran's claims of seeking friendly Gulf ties while targeting only US bases, noting every GCC state—including mediators Oman and Qatar—has been attacked. Pinfold found no evidence for Iran's claim that US bases in the Gulf are being used to strike it, pointing to Gulf states' pre-war demands that Washington not use their facilities. He described Iran's strategy as one of "chaos," attacking all Gulf states to pressure Washington into a ceasefire by making the war too costly, even at the expense of burning bridges with regional neighbours. He noted a disconnect between UAE official Anwar Gargash's suggestion that a "breakthrough is in reach" and Iran's belligerent posture. While dialogue may continue post-war, Pinfold concluded there is now "no love lost" between Gulf publics and Iran, which has repeatedly targeted civilians across the region.
