The war in the Middle East took a serious turn when Israel bombed Iran's energy facilities. In retaliation, Iran stepped up attacks on its Gulf neighbours. The damage is significant and will take years to repair. It also has long-term consequences—Qatar has already warned of a reduction in exports. In the short term, the immediate effect was another surge in energy prices. This escalation is dangerous. Energy exports from the Gulf region account for a fifth of global output.
