'Open the Strait': UN Security Council meets on maritime security, waterway safety
Dozens of countries are holding a special session at the United Nations on Monday, warning traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is threatening global trade and energy supplies. The waterway is still caught in between rival blockades by both Iran and the US. The Security Council meeting comes amid a near-total collapse in shipping through the vital corridor. Diplomats are weighing new proposals from Tehran to reopen the strait in exchange for an end to the conflict. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres issued an urgent appeal.
