Gulf states back US-led UN resolution on Strait of Hormuz security
In a joint UN press stakeout, ambassadors from Bahrain, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait announced a draft Security Council resolution calling on Iran to halt attacks on commercial shipping, end illegal tolling and remove sea mines from the Strait of Hormuz. Jamal Fares Alrowaiei of Bahrain said the draft builds on Resolution 2817 and seeks to ensure safe and unimpeded navigation through one of the world’s most strategic maritime corridors. Mike Waltz of the United States described Iran’s actions as “textbook violations of international law,” warning that the establishment of a so-called “Persian Gulf Strait Authority” risks normalising unlawful interference in global shipping. He compared the situation to the Straits of Gibraltar to illustrate the global impact of restricting key waterways. Mohamed Issa Abushahab of the UAE said recent developments in the Strait of Hormuz have led to significant disruptions in maritime traffic and warned of the wider risks to global energy security and supply chains. Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani of Qatar said the situation has affected around 20 percent of global oil and LNG trade, with major implications for energy markets and maritime stability. Saudi Arabia’s ambassador warned that disruptions to maritime transit are hitting vulnerable, import-dependent countries hardest, particularly through rising energy and food insecurity. Tareq Albanai of Kuwait said the draft resolution reaffirms a core principle of international law: that international waterways must remain open, secure and free from coercion or unlawful restriction. The draft would act under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, making its provisions binding. The ambassadors urged all UN member states to co-sponsor the resolution.
