South Africa anti-immigration protesters demand undocumented migrants leave
Anti-immigration protesters in Durban, South Africa, have marched to the Home Affairs office, demanding that undocumented migrants leave the country by September 30.
The protest comes as refugees have been living on the streets outside the Home Affairs office since May. The government says it plans to relocate them to Gauteng province, but the move has been delayed.
Refugees describe difficult living conditions, while activists have condemned the protests as “shameful”. Protest leaders, however, are threatening further mobilisation if the government does not act.
The demonstrations highlight growing tensions over migration, undocumented workers and the treatment of refugees in South Africa.
