Khamenei assassinated: Iran's succession process explained
The assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has triggered a constitutional succession process that will determine the country's future direction. The Supreme Leader holds authority over the military, judiciary, nuclear policy and national security, far exceeding the president's power. He is selected by the 88-member Assembly of Experts, a clerical body whose candidates are vetted by the system, not by public vote. Until a successor is chosen, a temporary council including the president and judiciary chief will oversee the country. This is only the second such transition since the Islamic Republic was founded in 1979. Al Jazeera's Victoria Gatenby reports.
